Just got back from Montello. Beautiful weather and great time. Snow finally came to the valleyafter a week of unseasonably warm weather. Just a few inches Saturday morning. Miss it and all the great people already. 2012 is the start of a new year and closer to the time I can move out to Montello full time.December 25 we drove to New York to visit ground zero and pay our respect to all the fallenheroes. RIP, all will be remembered in our hearts forever.

Bad issues at Rv.

With the cold weather now in place. JT has a major issue at the rv. "Heater wont run and went down to 2 inside and everything FROZE. All pipes, faucets, toilet, paint, bottles of water, cats water dish, etc.... still trying to thaw everything out to access $$$ damage and also fix heater. Have no clue why it shut off and why it wont fire up. Plenty of propane and stove works."Update," Got heater running after a big cleaning .. might be a coincidence or maybe dust in a sensor. Blue flame propane heater running at composter. Electric heater in pump and pipe area, inside heater set at 70. Waiting till pipes thaw to see if any damage. Hot water heater is OK I drained that and it looks ok, but pump and all pipes are frozen solid. Hope to thaw in a few hours."Lets hope the damage is minimal. We do have a spare water pumpfor the RV in case it needs to be replaced.To all future Montello dwellers, the winters are brutal out here and a small issue can turn into a big one very rapidly.

Sandy was not in town more than an hour when a call comes in about an accident on 233.JT is not only a member of the Tacoma Township Volunteer Fire department in Montello. He is the Deputy chief. So off he goes to assist. Not a problem, he is here to help all residents ofMontello and Elko County.

JT drove over 1100 miles Friday to get back to Montello. Weather was great, so he just keptgoing. Saturday they are calling for snow. The roads in Wyoming and Utah are treacherousenough dry, add snow and ice and travel almost comes to a stop.Looking forward to seeing everyone in Montello over Thanksgiving!!! Yeah.

Pump house work delayed

JT is currently helping out a fellow Montello resident move back from New York. On Tuesday Nov 7 JT flewto New York and is presently driving a Toyota Tundra truck back to Montello. This cross country trip wasshort notice but JT loves to drive and the ride has become very familar the last few years.Hopefully the weather will cooperate once he is back in Montello and he can continue his work. I will be flyingout on Thanksgiving day to spend a few days with everyone.

The 30th Annual National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Weekend will be held at the National Fire Academy in Emmitsburg on October 15-16, 2011. The National Fallen Firefighters Foundation (NFFF) and the Department of Homeland Security's U.S. Fire Administration will honor 72 firefighters who died in the line of duty in 2010. A bronze plaque containing their names will be added to the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial, located here on the National Fire Academy campus. Seventeen firefighters who died in previous years will also be honored. The plaques surrounding the Memorial, which was established in 1981, will contain the names of more than 3,500 firefighters. Twenty-seven states experienced line-of-duty deaths in 2010. Deaths resulted from vehicle accidents while en route to or returning from emergency calls, building collapses, natural disaster response, falling, drowning, heart attacks, and burns/smoke inhalation. Three multiple fatality incidents accounted for six deaths. One multiple fatality occurred during a flashover at a structural fire; one incident resulted from an apparatus accident, and one involved a building collapse at a commercial structure fire. Illinois had the nation's greatest number of firefighter line-of-duty deaths in 2010 with 8, followed by New York and Pennsylvania with 7; and Kansas had 6. "Firefighters are called upon to face danger on a daily basis," said Chairman of the NFFF Board of Directors, Chief Dennis Compton. "In October, a grateful Nation will honor their dedication and remember their sacrifice. Opie our orange and white kitty bolted out the door Wednesday night. JT has searched and searched but no luck. It appears Opie is the victim of the Nevada wildlife. Bandit our other kitty misses his buddy very much and follows JT everywhere. I guess this is another part of life in Nevada that we will need to adjust to.

Not sure how this will effect our permanent relocation date to Montello, Nevada, but JT is no longer working at the Ranch. With the amount of work required of him, there were not enough hours in the day to work on our homestead. Many projects were put off over the last 10 months and no changes were seen to be forthcoming. Great adventure, sorry to see it end,but hopefully other opportunities will arise, to keep JT in Nevada until I can join him.

Flying in to Salt Lake Aug 13, heading to Lake Powell and visiting Rainbow Bridge on Monday Aug 15. This picture was taken last year at Rainbow Bridge. Will head up to Montello on the 16th. Hope to see everyone while I am there. Head back to Maryland on the 22.

Sad part of JT's job

As all of us that live in the Montello area know life can be hard, and animal deaths are almost common place. Yesterday was one of the hard days, as JT received a call that no cattle rancher wants to hear. A cow was stuck in a cattle guard. Unable to reach any cowboys in the area, JT drove out to the site. An Elko county sheriff had found the cow and requested his dispatch to contact the ranch. When JT arrived, it was obvious the cow would have to be put down. Both back legs were wedged in the cattle guard, broken and protruding through the skin.

The sheriff put the cow down as humanely as possible. The cow will be butchered with the meat to be distributed to the cowboys. Both the sheriff and JT were saddened by this event, but knew they had no choice.

ELKO — The City of Elko Planning Commission is discussing the extension of a conditional use permit for the installation of a 50-foot cell phone tower.

The commission already granted the permit to Alltel Communications, now AT&T.

The monopole telecommunications tower has three panel antennas and the inclusion of omni antennas, to replace the existing 40-foot tower owned by the Nevada Department of Information Technology.

The permit also allows for the installation of radio equipment inside one of the vacant storage areas in the rear of the lot within a commercial zoning district. The property is generally northwest of the intersection of Connolly Drive and Mountain City Highway.

This item was tabled at a Planning Commission meeting in May to allow for AT&T to attend and answer questions from the commission and the public.

The meeting is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. today at Elko City Hall.

AT&T will be at this meeting. Maybe someone can get some answers!!!!!

One year ago we got cell service. And now for the past several days it has been down.
It is easy to get use to it and when it malfunctions we are in trouble.
Hope it gets fixed soon. Please keep telling Verizon there is a tower in Montello.

Living in Washington, D.C. I don't think JT ever thought his job would entail rescuing a calf from a ditch. But now it is part of his job description. This guy or gal was found in a ditch. JT picked it up and put it in the back of his truck, for the ride back to the ranch and hopefully a safer home..

JT found this dog along the road to the ranch. He had a small dog with him(wearing a jacket), but the small dog ran away from JT. This dog jumped into the back of JT's truck and stayed. If anyone knows who this dog belongs to or if it was abandoned please contact JT or myself. Thanks!

Just trying to deal with the cold weather. The sun has been hiding for awhile, so rethinking solar. Purchased a 600W wind generator to assist with charging the battery bank. Work keeping JT busy so installation is on hold.
Life is just as busy and hectic even in the cold and snowy winter.

Adding new road 8 tenths of a mile to Steve O's houses. Was able to work on our own road also, now just need a little rain.

Corner posts have been measured out for the fence will be approx 160'x 120' with 2 gates on each end for both roads. Plus skirting needs to be done around the trailer. Lot of work but a labor of love!!!

We are leaving for Nevada by way of Arizona on Tuesday August 10th. Going to take a southern route, thru Texas, New Mexico and Arizona. Stopping at Lake Powell to visit Rainbow Bridge.

Heading up to Montello Monday Aug 16. I will stay till Sunday and JT will stay awhile longer.

My surgery went well, just have to take things slow and easy for awhile.

Cant wait to see everyone again!!!

What a difference a few months make. We are having a horrible heat wave here in Maryland. Humidity sky high. Montello we miss you!!!

JT and I are hoping to be back the middle of August. I am having a few health issues that may force us to postpone this trip. JT will definitely be coming back to check on the 5th wheel, catch up with our friends and install barbed wire fencing to protect our homestead from the free roaming cattle later this fall.

JT left Montello at 10am eastern time on Wednesday June 16. He arrived home safe and sound at 9:40 am on Friday June 18th. That's a Smokey and the Bandit type of driving!!! This is our backyard view in Maryland. In 24 hours or less, I am sure he will be wishing we could go back now to our friends and home in Montello. Thank you!

Winding down this trip

Beautiful rainbow for a beautiful place, just outside our front door.

Hate to leave but it is time to head back for a short while. Solar lights and a security camera with recorder are installed. Hopefully t-mobile will be out there eventually so we can see our land and property in real time from any internet access.

Many townspeople have brought up the issue of theft and break ins. We are concerned that all our hard work, especially JT's will be ruined by a few people. We have great friends who have offered to watch over our property, and we thank them in advance for there help and support. Please pray all will be left alone for us to enjoy and continue our work till we are there 100%.

We might be able to swing back in July but definitely will be there in August with JT staying even longer than this time.

I flew back this am from Salt Lake. Back to hot, sticky, and ugh. Seeing our cats was great but I miss everyone in Montello. JT has a lot on his to do list. Solar security light with motion detector. Security camera, gray water drainage field etc. Lots to do with so little time,along with finishing doors around composter.

It was great meeting Preston and his girls. They are great and being able to hang out with Bill for a few days was awesome. We are very lucky to be friends with terrific people!!

Rain delays departure for JT

Looks like the rain is going to keep JT in Nevada a little while longer, Yeah for him boo for me. I will arrive saturday and will stay till thursday. Then I will fly back myself and JT will stay out in Montello a few more weeks to get all the work done. We have been told June and July are the best months to get work done so lets hope it is true.

Just a few more days and I get to fly out to Montello(by way of Salt Lake). Work continues on the 5th wheel. Still not sure if JT will stay longer or we will drive back home together.

Bill is out for a visit and JT has run into him a few times. Great to meet a fellow blogger!!! We have been told the best weather for working outside is June and July. Of course that is when we need to be home, but hopefully if JT does not stay he will be back in early July. Lets hope all will be safe while we are away.

Propane tank to be delivered

Wendover Propane is suppose to come out today May 19 and deliver a 325 gal propane tank. They will pressure test the RV equipment, disconnect my two 30lb tanks and regulator ( I will use them for the generator) and make all the connections for the stationary system. JT has already dug the 2' by 20' ditch required so we wont have to pay for that part. Once that is done he can start working on the RV skirting and insulation,which hopefully will be done before we leave for home May 31st.

On Saturday May 1 at around 1:30 pm JT and Lindsay made it to the KOA in West Wendover. Safe and sound, but as you can guess tired. I can't say it was an easy or uneventful trip but not too bad.

They left Council Bluffs on Friday April 30 around 10 am heading to anywhere in Wyoming. Rain was light to moderate up to Lincoln and then it stopped. A little windy but nothing serious. Nebraska is a long drive. Not sure which rest stop this was but here is Lindsay!

Nearing the Wyoming border the weather started to get very cold and it started to snow.

Earlier in the day a high wind warning and no small trailer advisory was posted from Cheyenne to Laramie. Luckily by the time they got to Wyoming the advisory had been canceled. Now the problem would be snow in some areas.

First stop Summit rest area in Cheyenne. Originally this was going to be the stop for the night but it was still daylight so they both agreed to keep going. But not before meeting a new friend and going in to check out the stop.

The weather looked good so off they went heading towards Wagonhound rest stop 50 miles west of Laramie. As they climbed the mountains the weather started to change as is the norm for Wyoming.

The roads were fine so they kept going to Wagonhound. I sent a picture from a Wyoming traffic cam that showed A view of Elk Mountain where they were. And JT at the same time sent a similar picture from their view.

They stayed for the night and woke up at 2am to 3 inches of snow and snowing pretty good. Decided to stay put for awhile and around 5 am headed out as the roads looked clear. The wind picked up so several stops were made, plus there was a black ice advisory so the trip to Rawlins 53 miles away was a slow but safe one.

The weather cleared so, after a few rest stops and another new friend (prairie dog?) the trip continued.

Next stop Utah! No other issues except some snow in the mountains and rain and snow in Salt Lake City. Past Salt Lake it was smooth sailing to Wendover.
Arrival time 2 pm. The trailer was in good shape, slight mishap with kitchen sink hose coming off and water spraying them,but all was fine. Lucy at the KOA kept a good eye on the trailer for us.

Relaxing and planning to explore, plus setting up the property, is the plan for the week. Moving the trailer to the property is still on for Saturday May 8. But for now JT and Lindsay are enjoying our future home and the great state of Nevada!!!

In Iowa

Well JT and Lindsay left April 28 and drove to Pennsylvania to pick up well supplies at Keith Specialty Store ( https://keithspecialty.com/). Found them on the internet and they had everything ready when we got there. Fred is a great person. Once loaded we then headed west. JT drove over 700 miles that day before they called it a night.

Got up early this am (April 29) and started heading towards Council Bluffs where they will sleep in a hotel and rest up for the second half of the trip. Along the way to Council Bluffs a stop was made at Freedom Rock. Just outside of Greenfield Iowa. Info on Freedom rock can be found at www.thefreedomrock.com

Now to rest up, keep an eye on the weather and head to Nevada tomorrow(April 30).

Packing is such a pain

It is less than 10 days till JT and Lindsay start there cross country trek. Lists are made, food supplies will be bought just before they leave. The truck will be cleaned and finally the trailer to be loaded. Lot of work to make sure everything they need is with them. I keep checking weather reports and all I see is rain. Hope that holds off for awhile. We need nice driving weather and a dry plat of land to move the 5th wheel to. The generator and well pump have arrived! Plumbing for the pump will be picked up in Pennsylvania on the way out of town. I will stay home and take care of the cats and house.

It looks like JT will only be staying 1 month this time. I will fly into Salt Lake on the 29th of May and rent a car to drive into Montello to check everything out (Save the wear and tear on the truck) We will head back to Salt Lake on Monday May 31, to drop off the car then head for home together.

Hopefully we will be back in August. There is a lot of work to be done but finding the time with all or our obligations at home is not easy. We just have to pace ourselves and focus on getting things done. Time flies so quickly, it will be 2013 before we know it.

Supplies ordered

It will be a little over 2 weeks till JT and Lindsay head out. The Brumby pump has been ordered.(Hope it gets here before they leave). A generator will be delivered tomorrow and the pumps plumbing supplies will be picked up in Pennsylvania enroute. Everything is coming together. I may be out there Memorial day weekend, either to visit(if JT is not ready to come home),or drive back to Maryland with JT.

Does anyone have any new information on the cell tower? We are hoping it will be activated by the time JT and Lindsay get out there. They will stay in West Wendover for the first week, then Lindsay will come home and JT will move the 5th wheel to the property. I know it will be a great sight and feeling to have the 5th wheel home!

April 28 On the road again!

Looks like this will be the travel date for JT. I am unable to get off work but Lindsay (JT's daughter) may accompany him on the trek. It will be her first time out to the area. Estimated arrival date in West Wendover is May 1. 4 days to travel 2250 miles. A long road but we need to move the 5th wheel to the property by the 8th of May. Not sure how long Lindsay will stay out there with JT, probably a week. I hope some of you get to meet her!!!!

Lots of preparation to be done at the property before the move. A Brumby well pump similar to Geoff's has been ordered, along with a generator. Insulation and skirting of the 5th wheel will be an ongoing process this summer. I know the list of things to do is an enormous task . Being so far away makes if difficult. JT hopes to stay out there a month to work on everything and I will stay here and support our dream.

If all goes well I will be out there the middle of August. Of course the hottest time of the year but we have a road trip planned to Rainbow Bridge which is considered the world's largest known natural bridge. It is located in Utah near Lake Powell.

Moving the 5th Wheel

For the past 7 months our 5th wheel trailer has been sitting at the KOA in West Wendover. If all goes well, JT will be driving out to Nevada the first part of May. We hope to move the trailer out to our land at this time. A well pump and generator will be our next purchases. This is the beginning of a new chapter in our move to Montello. Once the trailer is on site and placed in its permanent location, we can begin building our solar system and eventually be ready for full time living.
I am already dreaming of spending Christmas 2010 in our home in Montello. It may just be a dream but it is a nice one!

Just heard the great news! Thanks Geoff. Our property is right next door to Ron Watson. Having cell service in the area will be fantastic for everyone!!! This just made our day!!!!
